Adjust Font in MS Office Applications and Internet Browsers

Joseph Knight -

The purpose of this article is to explain various ways that font sizes can be adjusted in the most common applications that we use at Pandora. All of the options below will work on computers running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Most applications have a built-in "Zoom" feature that is located in the application's toolbar menu under View. The option allows the user to zoom in, zoom out and/or select a specific zoom level, usually represented as a percentage. Under most circumstances, both text and images will zoom as adjustments are made.

Option 1 - Using the application's built-in tool

Microsoft Office Applications

In the ribbon, click on the View tab and select Zoom

    1. In Word, Excel and PowerPoint, the zoom option appears as a magnifying glass

    2. Select the desired zoom level

    3. In Outlook, the Zoom feature only works in e-mail messages, not in the main Outlook window

    4. Please note that if you close the application with the desired zoom level selected, the setting will remain the next time you open the application

Internet Browsers

  1. Internet Explorer:
    1. Click on the “gear” icon and go to the Zoom entry on the list. Choose the desired zoom level

  2. Firefox and Google Chrome:
    1. Click on the “three line” icon and the zoom controls will be displayed

  3. In Internet Explorer and Firefox, there are options to zoom the entire webpage or only text displayed on the webpage

Option 2 - Using the mouse scroll feature

If you are using a mouse, the simplest way to adjust the zoom in most applications and browsers is to hold down the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and scroll up (to increase) or down (to decrease) using the mouse. The font size displayed in the active window will adjust with each click of the mouse scroll wheel. This method works in all Microsoft Office applications and internet browsers.

To reset your browser zoom level back to 100%, hold down the "Ctrl" key and press the number "0". Please note that this only works in internet browsers and not in other applications.
